Alzheimer’s disease is often misunderstood as simply “forgetting,” but it is much more—it disrupts the way a person thinks, remembers, and navigates everyday life. This cruel thief steals skills once taken for granted, piece by piece, changing not only the individual but also the family that walks beside them.

Themba, my husband, lives with Alzheimer’s. I live alongside it. Each week brings new challenges as he loses abilities he once had, shifting tasks from his hands to mine. At 63, he is still in the early stages, but the road ahead is uncertain and full of changes we cannot predict.

Our story began years before his diagnosis, when subtle shifts in Themba’s behaviour first emerged. The man who was once confident in business began struggling with simple tasks, forgetting familiar routes, and losing focus. Despite his efforts to stay ahead—regular testing and vigilance—the diagnosis eventually arrived, confirming what we had long sensed.

Living with Alzheimer’s is not just about managing symptoms; it is about redefining life and love in the face of loss. Every day is a lesson in patience, compassion, and resilience. There are moments of frustration—misplaced bills, forgotten appointments, or lost keys—but these pale in comparison to the bond that holds us together.

I have learned that happiness is a choice, even in hardship. When Themba forgets, when I grow weary, I remind myself that we are both doing the best we can. Our health is not just about the absence of illness but about nurturing a positive mindset that fuels hope and connection.

Alzheimer’s may take pieces of Themba’s mind, but it cannot erase the love and life we share. Together, we face the uncertainty, choosing to focus on the moments of joy, the strength in small victories, and the power of unwavering support. This is our journey—a testament to the enduring human spirit amid the quiet struggle of a fading mind.
